Main Idea

For my project, I am painting 4 portraits. These portraits are just silhouette’s of 4 people and the painting is abstract. I am using different colour palettes for each 1 will be blueish, 1 will be redish, 1 will be grey tones, 1 will be rainbow.  My pieces are meant to represent beauty in society and how people want you to look verses what you feel inside. I used 3 women because women are held up to higher beauty standards than men but I painted 1 man to show that men can be held up to harsh beauty standards as well. I feel like this will inspire people to be more themselves and not be cookie cutters of everyone else. In my life I try to not be like everyone else and I want everyone to feel comfortable to be themselves. These paintings will be weird and different and I hope to try and break social norms with these pieces.

Influences

I was inspired by the abstract art movement at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. In a way, I was inspired by Jackson Pollock because without him painting abstract impressionist art this art style would not be accepted. I am incorporating these techniques with the way I am painting the canvas. It is very gestural and abstract. In general, my art style is mainly derived from the abstract and modern art movements. I feel like they are more unique and leave more room for interpretation and that is more the art that inspires me.

Artist Statment

The importance and the meaning behind my piece. I need the viewer to know the reasoning behind my art pieces. How it is meant to represent inner beauty and criticism from society. This project is meant to show people that it is ok to be yourself. My painting style evolved over the course of these 4 paintings. In the bottom of the blue painting, my painting style is closer together and less gestural. As the paintings went on my painting style became more gestural and abstract. I believe that I accomplished my goal for this project. The paintings look like how I wanted them to look and I can see the meaning behind them. This project taught me how to be patient and how to make more gestural and abstract works of art. This can benefit me in the future because it will help me with other paintings and even drawings that I do. It will show me that I need to be patient and take my time even when I thought I wouldn't have to. The next step for me I believe would be to try and make another painting with the same style but a more complicated design so it will take me longer and my painting style will evolve even more in one piece.
